The 2026 Canadian Car Repair Price Report
We analyzed 108 common repairs at independent shops across Canada. The same job can cost 82% more depending on where you take your car โ even within fair prices.
๐ Finding #1 โ The 82% lottery
Across all 108 repairs, the gap between the low end and high end of fair pricing averages 82%. Both ends are legitimate independent-shop prices โ the difference is which shop you walk into. On average, comparing just two quotes saves $285 per repair.

๐ธ Finding #2 โ Catalytic converters: the biggest gamble in car repair
One repair stands alone: a catalytic converter replacement ranges from $582 to $1,705 โ a 193% spread. Body parts with volatile parts pricing (mirrors, headlights, bumpers) dominate the top of the list.
๐ท๏ธ Finding #3 โ The most expensive repairs in Canada (2026)
Fair prices at independent shops, standard sedan. SUVs add ~15%, luxury vehicles ~35%.
| # | Repair | Fair range | Mid |

โฑ๏ธ Finding #4 โ When it's all labor, the hourly rate is the price
Diagnostics, inspections, tire rotations and alignments are 85โ100% labor โ no parts to hide behind. With Canadian shop rates ranging $95โ$130/hour, the same one-hour diagnostic can cost $95 or $130 before anyone touches a wrench. For labor-heavy jobs, ask the hourly rate first.

๐ Finding #5 โ The luxury premium is real: +35%
Our data prices three vehicle classes. Everything else equal, an SUV costs 15% more to repair than a sedan, and a luxury vehicle 35% more โ same job, same hours, pricier parts and higher shop rates. That $1,100 timing-chain job on a sedan is ~$1,485 on a luxury SUV.
Methodology โ how we got these numbers
- 108 repairs across 11 categories (engine, brakes, electrical, transmission, suspension, tires, exhaust, heating & cooling, body & glass, maintenance, diagnostics).
- Each repair = parts cost range + labor hours ร shop rate. Parts ranges from 2026 Canadian supplier pricing; labor hours from standard flat-rate times.
- Shop rate $95โ$130/hour โ the going range at independent Canadian shops in 2026 (dealerships charge more; they are excluded).
- Ranges reflect real variation between independent shops, not dealer-vs-indie. Your quote falling inside the range = fair.
- Prices in CAD, before tax. Vehicle-class multipliers: sedan 1.0ร, SUV 1.15ร, luxury 1.35ร.
